My heart sank. “How bad is it?”
“Well, Nate was right about the candle,” said Hayley. “It’s the source of the flame and it holds the spell together.”
“I’m flattered,” said Nate impatiently. “Did she find out anything we don’t already know? How do we put it out?”
“Here comes the funny part. We can’t. The only one who can put it out is the one who lit it.”
She glared at Nate. Nate didn’t look back at her. He was absently staring at the wall.
“So,” Hayley scoffed. “Do you think if we call and ask Kenneth politely, he might drop by and let us out of here?”
“Hayley.” Nate raised his hand. “Shut up.”
“Me? Shut up?” she snapped. “I told you this was a trap. If you had listened to me—”
“I said shut up and let me think.” Nate stared at me. “I was looking at this the wrong way,” he muttered. “I thought it was some incantation.”
I knew what he was thinking because I was thinking the same.
“Do you think it will work?” I asked, my pulse racing from excitement.
Nate tilted his head. “It wouldn’t hurt to try.”
“Try what?” yelled Hayley.
Nate dashed to the hall, grabbed his bag sitting on the marble table, and he and I rushed upstairs. Logan and Hayley caught up with us, and the four of us stood staring at the black, spiraled candle.
“Well?” Hayley spread her hands. “You can’t put it out by staring at it. Believe me, I’ve tried.”
“He went through the trouble of creating this flame and enchanting the fireplaces to make sure we are still here when he returns in victory.” Nate smirked. “He’s sure we don’t have a single chance to escape.”
He put the bag on the table and pulled out of it a small vial with red liquid.
Hayley gasped. “Is that what I think it is?”
Nate unstopped the vial. Holding my breath, I watched him tilt the vial above the flame.
All it took was one big drop. The moment it sank into the flame, the candle went out. At the same second, a silver circle of energy shot out of it. The four of us shuddered as it jolted through us, then the walls.
I clenched my teeth. I’d been hit by magical energy so many times in the last few months, I’d almost gotten used to it. Hayley, however, screeched.
“Holy shit!” Her wide eyes darted from one face to another.
“You’re so out of practice.” Nate grinned at her.
“I can’t believe this,” she said, catching her breath. “How did you get his blood?”
“You know they are Cain and Callahan, right?” Logan chuckled. “Who were the keepers of Kenneth’s body for two hundred years?”
“Yeah, but I thought . . . Have you had it for all those years?”
“No,” I said. “We extracted it when we paid him a visit a few months ago.”
“Let’s make sure it worked,” Hayley said, her eyes glittering with excitement.
We went to the hallway, and she dashed to the balcony door. She stood in front of the doorway, shifting from foot to foot like she was preparing for a sprint.
